DayZ – Map overview
During the past 2 months several new maps have popped up from all corners of the earth. The DayZ mod and its maps seems to have a life of its own now that Rocket and his crew are working on the standalone version. Chernarus and the official servers is still the home for us all but some of the new maps are still a great way to try something new. There is nothing like the feeling of not knowing where to go and explore the deep dark secrets of the maps.
Let’s take a quick look at the different maps currently available.
Chernarus
This is the original DayZ map. Home of the words:
“- Where are you?”
“- On which side is the ocean?”
“- I’m at Hamnek…, Hamna …, Namnaks… , Nadezinho, something like that. oh and I see trees.”
With the action around Stary, Northwest Airfield and the axe killings in Cherno and Electro this still is our favorite map.
Unfortunately the helping out has come to a minimum and its shoot on sight. On the official servers the amount of script kiddies and hackers has gone a bit out of proportion and made the joining of those servers somewhat undesirable.

Lingor Island
This was the first new map after Chernarus. A really welcome sight with the palm trees, ocean and tropical climate. The military spawns on this map were in my opinion too high. I am still looking for more of a survival feeling than a military shooter type game. When I logged on and my character looked like a 70s pornstar with his demin west and mustache I was sold. This was awesome, though I miss my hero skin.
The map itself is done by Icebreaker (also made the Panthera map) and has many points of interest. Good loot and loads of ambush places.

Fallujah, Takistan, Zargabad & Utes
These four maps are rather unfamiliar to me because the lack of time. I have tried Fallujah and Takistan for some short game sessions. Utes I know from Arma 2. It’s where I practices hunting and flying. Utes was for a short while filled with PvPers, the small map made it ideal for close quarter combat. Zargabad is a mystery to me and to be honest, desert maps aren’t really to my taste when it comes to DayZ.
Fallujah was fun one evening. With the military helicopter and cars it was fun for a while but again feeling more like a military simulator to me than a survival game. The only interesting thing was the airport and that didn’t even make me happy. Again, it all depends on what you are looking for from a map.

Panthera
Now this map is an adventure, large with loads of mountains and small villages. The map has a well spread out loot cover. The middle of the map is almost just mountains but the coasts are nice. It pretty much has the best of Lingor and Chernarus but still failed on some minor details. The roads, the horror. Driving around this map might take a while because the roads are slow, bumpy and a bit bugged. We played on a map with a large vehicle spawn which made getting a helicopter quite easy. This map is fun, but be sure not to get too attached to your gear because you will fall of mountain cliffs, slide of hills, break your legs and get sniped from mountain tops.

Namalsk
For a Finn like me this map felt like home. That exact look and feeling is what we currently have here. It somewhat cold, it snows sometimes and everything just looks a bit dark and grey.
The first impression of this map was really good. I scared the shit out of me. The sounds are brilliant and give a more intense gaming experience. This map is haunted. It does however have too many zombies and the re-spawn rate is way too high. You have to be on red alert all the time. I myself however found a yellow Ural. Fell in love with this car and had a few awesome evening with it touring the island. Another thing about this map is that you really need to find war clothes. You get a flue very easily and antibiotics are hard to find. Not to mention the coughing giving away your position.
