Epic battles in PlanetSide 2
Let’s start by looking at what PlanetSide 2 is. If you still haven’t played or heard about it you might want to do that now.
PlanetSide 2 is a free-to-play Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter (aka MMO FPS). The game consists of three large open map continents where three factions battle over the resources. When first starting it all seems somewhat confusing but don’t be afraid to jump in and join the action. A few evenings of gaming and you already know where to go and what to do.
Choosing Empire and Class
To start off you need to choose between the three factions: the New Conglomerate, Terran Republic or Vanu Sovereignty. Once you’ve chosen your empire you can start trying out the different classes.
There are 5+1 classes, Light Assault, Heavy Assault, Medic, Engineer, Infiltrator and the optional Max, which actually is a suit for your character. Depending on your game style you can just play as a pilot or tank driver if infantry doesn’t fit your taste. Note that you can change your class on respawn. Which makes supporting different situations on the fly easy.
Gaining experience and Certification Points
Your character gains experience and certification points with certain objectives like killing players, catching bases or destroying enemy vehicles. This is attached to your character, so you need to be careful what to buy with your certification points and it is a good idea to focus on one class at the time. Certification points can also add upgrades to ground and air vehicles.
Squads and Outfits
Playing PlanetSide 2 is most fun with friends. You can play alone and have fun but joining a Squad and get some orders and objectives increases the experience. A Squads is a group of players joining in a mutual objective (just like a Party, Group, Raid etc in other games). An Outfit is like a guild, a larger group of people. There are different types of grouping options and they all have built in voice and text chats, which makes communicating easy. We still use TeamSpeak thou and mostly only look only at the text chat.
The January Patch
There is a major patch coming out at the end of January. Below is a video where TotalBiscuit goes through most of the changes.
Friday Night Ops – Twitch Channel
Every Friday (4pm – 9pm PST) you can watch some gameplay on Twitch if you don’t feel like playing. The stream is where you get to hang out with various developers and community members.
